How do you pottytrain a 2 yr old dog?

we just got our dog, zoey. she is a doxen/chihuahua mix and very sweet. today was our full day with her and she peed on the rug. we stuck her nose in it and said no go potty outside. we stuck her outside but she doesnt go. then we think she peed on the couch. we arent sure but we stuck her nose on it and then said go potty outside and I brought her to go outside. she still doesnt go. we stick her on our screened in back porch. my dad said if she doesnt quit she is gone. she just went potty outside, but usually she doesnt go. you have to stand out there for a long time. any advice how to train her to go outside?

The same as a puppy. Schedule is everything to a dog. You will need a crate and a collar and leash.

Zoey will have to be with you at all times or in a small crate that is big enough to stand up turn around and lie down in. No bigger. If it is bigger she will potty or pee in it and go to the corner of the crate. DO not leave her in the crate all the time, it is a training tool and a place to sleep when you can not watch her.

You than have her on a schedule of every two hours you take her out to potty during the day and while you are up. You do not leave food down all the time. You do leave fresh water down but pick it up at 7:00 at night until the next morning. Make sure you take her out side when you first take her out of her crate in the morning and take her out the last thing you do before you go to bed at night than place her in her crate to sleep.

You feed her twice a day at the same time each day. 15 mins than pick up the food. If she does not eat it don’t worry she will eat it the next time. Only feed the amount recommended on your food for her weight. NO more during training time.

When Zoey is not in the crate she is on a leash with you or attached to you or something in the room with you. Always watch her while you are training. Do not let her go off alone because she is up to something or will be while you are training.

You must remember to let her out on schedule. Schedule is everything to a dog. It is so important to teaching her it is time to potty.

When you take her out, tell her “Go Potty!” “Go Potty” if she only pees and not poos tell her again and see if you will potty. You need to be with her to monitor her doings. If she is not peeing or pooing she is holding it.

You also must walk your dog, only give her the amount of exercise for a Chihuahua. Read up on your breed. If you want to keep her get busy and do the work it will take to train her. All dogs are trainable, if people will do the work.

I just trained a 9 year old kennel Chihuahua to be house trained. She had lived in a kennel all her life. When we go out I tell her Go Potty Reba, Go Potty! If I don’t she just stands there and looks at me until I do. If she just pees I will tell her again and she will go back out and poo. If she doesn’t and she just stands there and looks at me wagging her tail, I know she does not have to poo this time.

Before I trained Reba she would pee right on the carpet.

Magichalo is right…you treat her just like she was a puppy…she can control her bladder better than a pup, but without training, she doesn’t know what is expected of her…therefore YOU have to do her thinking for her.

DO NOT RUB HER NOSE IN IT!! That’s cruel and unproductive…all you’ll do is make her afraid of you. TAKE HER OUTSIDE YOURSELF. Every hour at first, and praise her like she’s the best thing since sliced bread.

If she pees or poops on the carpet, roll up a newspaper and hit yourself in the head, repeating…’I didn’t watch the dog”…You MUST watch her constantly…do not give her the run of the house…keep her with you at all times. It might take a couple of weeks…but you’ll be grateful you spent the energy and the time. Keep her crated when you cannot watch her, and at night.

thanks. we bring zoey outside to potty. I tell her Go Potty! and she doesnt do anything. she just sits on my leg. she is to attatched to me. I love her though. she is a very good dog and the lady we got her from said that she was house trained but they never kept her in the house. they kept her on the screened in porch. she is going to pee in the house some because she is nervous because she just got here. but im just afraid I am going to have to get another dog. im to attatched to her.
