How do you get your life started?

How do you get your life started from nothing? I am 18 years old high school graduate. I moved 9 hours from my hometown. Right now I live with my sister who pays me $50 every two weeks for babysitting the kids when they get out of school while she is still at work.

I dont know how to drive or cook and I want to go to a university but I dont have the money to even pay for a community college. I know there are scholarships out there but I dont qualify for many on the count of I graduated with a 2.2 gpa and a 16 on the act. Basicly I’m getting nowhere in life right now and I’ll be 19 in january.

well first of all, basic living skills, like cooking. Does your sister cook? If she has time ask her to teach you how to. get a job somewhere else like in a supermarket, or mcdonalds (I know it sounds horrible but its great money. my 17yo boyfriend works there and gets good pay) they will obviously teach you how to cook that type of food but go around asking if there is any jobs avaliable in shops, supermarkets, etc. Just to give you money. save it up to go towards a college or university fund =) even if you have to sacrifice nights out or whatever you do in your spare time… it will be worth it in the end. do you help your sister around the house? I think start of with small steps then work your way up =) if something goes wrong stay calm and try it again. Dont panic as you can get somewhere =) x be positive =)x

You have very concrete ideas about what you want to do to give yourself fulfillment, which is a hell of a lot more than most people in their 30s have, so give yourself points for that already.

On the home front, those are easy fixes. You want to learn to cook? It sounds like you have plenty of time on your hands, and it doesn’t take much to get started, so by all means, learn how to cook. I highly recommend looking up some of Chef Todd Mohr’s videos (many can be found online). He teaches basic cooking method, which will give you incredible empowerment in the kitchen, much more than simply memorizing recipes.

You want to learn to drive? Well, we know you have at least $100, which is more than you would need for driving lessons, assuming your sister won’t let you fool around in the driveway.

And you want to go to college but don’t have the money? Here’s the big secret: no one has the money. Well, most people don’t. That’s why God created student loans. Hell, I graduated 10 years ago and I’m still paying them off, so just relax, get used to the idea of a little bit of debt, and go talk to a financial aid advisor. Explain you’re situation and they’ll walk you through each step.
