How do we help her?

So my mom is the best. But she has really bad habits that our whole family hates. (drinking and smoking cigarettes) she gets really mad when we ask her to try to quit and she acts totally different when she drinks. I hate it sooo much.
We’ve tried everything buy a shrink, and that’s pathetic. How do we let her know we really care and help her stop??? Please!!!

Answer #1

Well, maybe if you all really try to work together to let her know just how much it really upsets you all, it would help, tell her how you are scared about her health and that you are really scared, and that if anything she should do it for you.

Best of luck!

Answer #2

You can’t force a person to quit, sadly. Start leaving lung and liver cancer information laying around the house, where she can see it, and maybe she’ll get the clue as to how dangerous her habits really are.

Answer #3

She’s an adult. If those are habits she chooses, you need to accept it. If the alcohol is being abused or she has alcohol dependence, then that is a different issue. So a psychiatrist is lame, so you’re willing to do anything as long as it is not “pathetic”? Uhm ok… it’s a little hard to take you seriously when you’re willing to help your mother as long as it is a “cool” thing to do?
