How do stocks work?

How do they work? What’s the point of them? and anything else I need to know about them. My teacher was talking about them in class. I got curious.

It all starts when a company wants to raise money to invest in something they think will make them money, to get the money to make the new item, restraunt, or what they selll “stocks” This is essentially selliit may be hey sell stocks.. which This is essentially selling a bit of the company and sometimes it carries a promise of getting a split of the profits when there are profits to split.
