How to distinguish between an atom and an element?

Could someone pleeease tell me the distinguish between an Atom and an Element. I am confused here :s Help me. I need the answer for my Science tution. Kindly answer the distinguish between an Atom and an Element. I be dead if I didn’t get the answer to it by Thursday this week. Could anyone answer this; the distinguish between an Atom and an Element. Help meee!!! Thanks to anyone who does :)

Atoms are the building blocks of everything. Every piece of matter in the universe is made up of atoms. The atom is a basic unit of matter For more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atom

Elements are pure substances - A chemical element is a pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom. They are whats listed on your Periodic table of ELEMENTS. and again for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_element

an atom is a representative of an element. an element describes the number of protons. a specific element has to have that precise number of protons. an atom is an element that contains that same number of protons but different numbers of electrons and neutrons. For example, the element Hydrogen has 1 proton. There are hydogen atoms that have 1 proton and 0 neutrons, others have 1 proton and 1 neurtron, others have 1 proton and 2 neutrons, etc. thus, the atom is the particular representative of that element.
