First, and most importantly, you must learn about the publisher you wish to send it to. Everyone has completely different rules with publishing, and you need to follow these carefully. Now, many big (and small) publishing companies will NOT deal with you if you do not have a literary agent. This is a person who will look at your work (maybe) and decide if they like what you’ve done. They know which publishing houses will like your work, so they will deal with that for you. Getting a publisher or Literary Agent’s attention can only be done through a query letter. This is a letter sent to the target explaining you, your writing history, a brief synopsis of your story, why your story is worth publishing, etc. Make sure, as I said in the beginning, to know EXACTLY what the publisher or Literary Agent is expecting from your query letter, and also your story itself. Do not query a horror Agent if you wrote Romance. These things make a huge difference, and you need to be careful. Their websites, books, etc will tell you what genres they deal with. Finally, do not lose your patience. Rejection is the biggest part of the business, and you have to have a thick skin. Never tell an agent or publisher that your work is good, because they will judge that themselves, and most of the time will not like it. Do not be discouraged, and good luck!
