How do I find out what nationality I am?

My mother had an affair 60 years ago, and I’m the result of it. How do I go about finding my nationality. Most DNA tests want to set you up with others. I grew up in a German household, but I look like I have European blood in me.

You know, I’m not sure if there is a DNA test that can distinguish anything more than a ‘guess’ as to where you came from. I know they can determine if you are of African decent or Hispanic… it’s possible they could narrow it down to a region based on a compilation of certain traits you have. I’ve been browsing around online for you and I’ve found several websites that may be able to help you if you’re interested:

  1. http://www.dnaheritage.com/faqs.asp
  2. http://www.gtldna.com/earth_origins_dna_ancestry.html

Hope these sites are more helpful than I was able to be. :)

well, my mom is dead. She went to her grave thinking I thought my dad was my dad. But he wasn’t my birth father. Not that I want know about him or anything, I just want to know if he was Italian, Greek, etc. which is in my blood. I heard there is a DNA test, but their too confusing to figure out.

Germany is ‘European’…

Your nationality is whatever country you were born in or (depending on country and your mother’s status) whatever nationality your mom is.

What I think you’re looking for is (perhaps?) your heritage. 60 years is a very long time. Does your mother remember anything about the man? His name perhaps? That would be the first place you would start.
