How could you cool a whole home in a hot rural area?

I am going to live in the country for a job opportunity and because my family is closer.I like the place and all, but it’s hot. I know a lot of people will say buy a small air conditioner and keep it in my room.the only thing about it is that I like to roam all around my house like wacthing a movie in the living room, or cooking in the kitchen, and things of that sort and an air conditioner will only cool a tiny space of that good sized home. I want to go home from a day’s work and relax with my whole place cooled in the living room if I want to wacth tv there or be all around my home. Is there any way to cool my whole 4 bedroom 2 floor country ranch without any local companies and access? Is there any portable machines that cool the whole home? Recommendations please

i hope you do not take offense,         To that that comes hereafter;         ’Tis only that it’s my two-cents,         Not one penny more thereafter. §;o)       My solution would be to cover all south/west windows; open one or two north/east windows on the bottom floor; and open one or two south/west windows on the top floor, placing a 24 inch by 24 inch window fan blowing outward. This would cause cooler air to be sucked in at the lower level and the hot air to be blown out via the upper level. The window fans are relatively inexpensive.

Machine wise…well, you’d need something in each room, or a central unit installed…but, there is a downside to a central unit if you have bad air flow.

Eg, we have a ranch home (3 bedroom / 2 bath) that we’re renting which is ~40 ish years old in the bay area. The problem with the central unit is because there isn’t good air flow around the house, you end up with some rooms being hot, others, very cold.

Is there a lot of insulation? With better insulation, then you won’t have to worry as much about the extreme temperatures, the house we’re renting is very poorly insulated, which is a big part of the problem.

you can buy portable free standing air conditioners that can be moved from room to room, but they need to be vented out a window. But its an option.

Answer #4

you could buy a few window air conditioning units and place them in the rooms you spend the most time in
