The Toltec tribe of Mexico are believed to have bred the fennec fox into a small dog called the “techichi” sometime between 200 and 100 BC, though little evidence supports this theory. It is believed that the chihuahua was created by breeding the techichi with Chinese crested dogs, brought to Mexico by European explorers. So, Dan41790, chihuahuas may or may not be descended from fennec foxes. It is likely that they are not, because if they were, they would be able to interbreed with each other (and they can’t). But if you seek the connection between the chihuahua and the wolf, the chihuahua is descended from the Chinese crested dog, which was descended from the Maltese, which was descended from the Tibetan Terrier, which was descended from the Tibetan Mastiff, which was descended from the Gray Wolf. According to the “Everthing Chihauhau Book”, Fennec foxes and Chi’s have bred together.
