how can I find out...

if I have low blood sugar?

(besides the doctor)

You could research this on Google: ‘symptoms of low blood sugar’ should do it. However, my personal experience is that it’s about feeling shaky and weak before your next meal is due. If you eat it stops. This obviously creates a great risk of snacking all the time and putting on lots of weight. The magazine article I read talked about eating a really good breakfast (high fibre, include ham or another meat etc) and avoiding processed sugars (either on their own or in sweet food). This way, you shouldn’t get that sugar ‘crash’ before the next meal, and should be able to avoid snacking.

I have hypoglycemia.. you get a very strong buzzing in your head, you shake and sweat… you can’t concentrate and it feels like the world around you is spinning. Your eyes can’t focus, and you can start to black out and even faint.

Typically when you start to feel woozy drink a glass of orange juice or eat a small snack. Make sure you take frequent snacks throughout the day, especially those between meal-gaps. Make sure your snacks contain about 15 grams of carbohydrates, no more and no less. So a few crackers or a handful of almonds is good too. ALSO, DO NOT EAT ANYTHING CONTAINING MSG (Monosodium glutamate) as this increases insulin production by about 4x normal rate. Also avoid completely if possible Cinnamon & Ginseng. Instead, make sure you’re eating lots of whole-grains, and eat a balanced, nutritious diet.

It’s hard to be diagnosed for hypoglycemia… because your blood sugar can vary one moment you’re fine and the next you could be very ill. Go see your doctor and ask to be tested.

Hypoglycemia can be confused for iron anemia, or even hyponatremia (low blood sodium), so until you’re properly diagnosed.. it could be anything. ;-)
