How can I convince my parents to let me stay out later?

I am from Hong Kong but I go to college overseas. During Winter and Summer break, I go home and live with my parents. During these breaks, I want to go out clubbing. However, my parents are extremely opposed to me going out to clubs because they feel that decent people should not be clubbing. They set a curfew of 1 am for me. This is very frustrating because I am already 20 years old (the drinking age in HK is 18) and almost all my friends are able to stay out much later. Is there any way for me to convince to let me stay out later and do you feel that most parents would allow their (grown) child to go out late at night?

Answer #1

uh… you’re an adult you can do whatever you want without your parent’s permission.

But you are staying at THEIR house so you should be respectful of their rules. The curfew is probably in place to help prevent underage drinking and you getting in a lot of trouble. I bet they will let you do anything you want once you’re 21.

Dear norelle, I understand very little about your culture but I have met several people from Hong Kong and they tell me it’s extremely important to honour mother and father. So since you are only there on breaks and probably won’t be there much longer after you graduate I would just simply go along with it for now. You must leave the home on a good note, one of honour and respect. Once you are out on your own you need not even tell them about your life style. Just hang in there for a bit longer. Sue…good luck
