Hostile female gerbil

My female gerbil has been attacking her 3 week old babies. There are no new pups in the cage, and things were peaceful till today. The male is fine and nurturing to the babies, but the mom keeps attacking them. I seperated her from all of them, now what do I do?

I dont know a lot about gerbils but I am just gessing it is like other small rodents, well the thing is the she probably was protecting her babies, maybe she couldnt take care of them, or she was to young to have babies.
