How can I stop being such a slow learner?

Hi. I’m 16 and have a problem with being more possitive about myself and other things like school mostly. I hate the way my body looks and I’m mostly negative about school and the work. I’m scared of the work and I’m terrified of math and money. I’m 16 and have trouble with counting money and simple math. My mom is helping me but I was just wondering what you think I should do. I know you need these simple skills of money for life but I cannt do it! It’s just so hard for me. It’s bad…I cannt count a simple amount and have no clue why. Is it because there is something wrong with my brain? I’m being serious!

Please help me find a way for me to learn faster…I’m a very, very, very, very slow learner at pretty much everything but mostly math and money.

First thing, don’t panic. Its not the end of the world.

Think about thigs that you like. Think about something that gives you the most pleasure. Now think about all the things that make it up. Its very hard for me to write this, b/c I don’t know what that is. But don’t worry. Don’t rush. Once you have picture of the stuff you like, try counting them. Slowly. You can lose track, its ok. As soon as you feel uncomfortable, stop counting, and think about something else.

Next, think the happiest moment of your life. Deeply remember it Rememebr details. Remember with it happened? How many years ago? Count. How many seasons ago? Count How many months? Count.

AS soon as you feel uncomfortable, stop. Don’t worry. You will get it.

Next, think of an event you can’t wait. Maybe getting driver license (that’s what it was for me at 16). Maybe until you’re 18 and can go to clubs. Or until your 21 and you can drink, or until some other event, like the prom, or a relative coming home, or a trip to disneyland that is booked. SOmething in the future with specific date. Now think, how far away is it. Count days, minutes. Make sure this even is very important to you. Think about it every day. Make a calendar. Cross out dates. Make an hour-calendar, Cross out hours.

Try to figure out how many hours you sleep. Count how many hours of what is left to wait for you will be sleeping. Figure out how many hours do you spend in school.

Try this. But if it doesn’t work, don’t panic!!! There are lots of things you can do. Nothing is wrong you with you, just some things are harder than others.

Dear busnellal627, Every school has a resource centre there you can get help with school work. Speak with your teacher and ask for this service. Have your mother take you to a doctor and ask for a diagnosis. They will do several tests to determine why you are having such a hard time. The thing to remember is that it isn’t your fault and sometimes a simple modification in the way you learn can make a huge difference but unless they know this they can’t help you. Sue…good luck

I believe part of the problem is the mere perception you have of yourself. Sitting there and telling yourself that you are a slow learner will only make the situation harder. You have to truly believe that you are a successful person and that you can persevere through the math and wash away the fear of money.I would suggest finding a group of like-minded people that you can bounce ideas off of that are in a similar situation to yours. This way, you not only feel positive about yourself, but you can also be a mentor to someone which allows you to help someone in the process. It’s a gradual process, but I know you can do it.

Answer #5

it is hard, I know. You see I have ADD when I was in school no one knew about it wha tit was. It took me a while to learn and I ended up going to child physocoligest and they did not know what my problem was. It did made me feel like I was weard. I had few friends and the teacher told the class that they had to play with me and that made things worse. that was when I was in graid school. we all learn at diferent rates, and different ways. so don’t kick your self about it. some times the slower learner is the one who learns the lesson better. In the end it is life that counts not a graid in school. I think that sue90 has some good ideas, I would follow her advice.
