Has anyone had Lasik?

I’ve been debating the whole lasik procedure idea for years how, and still haven’t made up my mind. My vision isn’t that bad, but I hate glasses, and contacts tend to irritate my eyes when I’m tired, you have to be extra careful when you put them in, etc. So has anybody here gotten lasik surgery before, and if so, what were the results? Thanks!

my friend had lasik… she can see clearly now and doesn’t have to wear her glasses. the only effect she had afterwards was not being able to drive at night for a couple of weeks so her eyes could heal.. that’s it. that was 2 years ago and she hasn’t had any complication.

I have thought about it, but haven’t gotten around to it. A few years ago, I worked with several guys who had it done, and they said that their eyes were pretty bad before the procedure and on the way home, they could read license plates on cars in front of them, which sounded good to me.

Let us know if you go ahead with it.

I’ve thought about it and decided against it. My reasons are:

I’ve always had a phobia about loosing my sight. Even when I was a musician I would rather loose my hearing than my sight even though loosing my hearing would mean loosing my livelyhood. The idea of surgery on my eye kinda’ freaks me out.

The surgery is irreversable; if you have a bad outcome they can’t undo it.

Since I was middle-aged I knew that before long I’d probably have presbyopia and need reading glasses even with vision correction surgery.

Notice that all the surgeons guaranty 20/20 vision? With glasses I see 20/15. If I had the surgery and ended up with only 20/20 vision I wouldn’t see as well as I do now with glasses.

All this said I did consider one proceedure a few years ago. There is a new technique called CK or Conductive Keratoplasty that doesn’t require cutting a flap. With this procedure the cornea is ablated using radio energy from a tiny antenna. Since most of the complications from other surgeries come from making the flap CK avoids these. At the time my right eye was almost perfect at +0.25 sphere and -0.25 cyl but my left eye was rather far sighted and required +2 sphere. I figured if I corrected my left eye +3 diopters that I would have monovision and would be able to see pretty well without glasses when I choose to (I’d still use glasses at work since I stare at a monitor all day). The problem here is that +3 diopters of correction is outside the range of correction with CK; CK is more for people who need just need a small correction; especially those with otherwise good vision who want to use monovision to avoid reading glasses for a few years.

My step-daughter had LASIK. She had extremely bad vision; she was literally blind without her glasses. After LASIK she doesn’t need glasses anymore so it did work out great for her. Someone in her situation would have a lot more motivation for having the surgery than someone like myself who can get by without glasses in a pinch.

I didn’t need glasses until I was 30 and I probably could have held out longer if I wasn’t staring at a CRT 8+ hours/day. Right now I use progressive lense glasses and that seems like a good solution for me but to tell the truth I never really minded wearing glasses that much.
