Has anyone ever worked as a 911 responder?
When I listen to recordings of conversations between 911 responders and people in trouble, I often wonder about these responders. I realize they have the hard job of trying to get detailed information from a panicky person. But sometimes the advice they give people seems a little unrealistic.
Has anyone ever had this job and if so, I’m curious what kinds of training you go through and what they tell you to say to people in emergency situations?
Not so much 911, however I do hazard responding for my job, when the weather calls for it. I work for the utility company for the eastern united states. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be, the money is great but being out in all kinds of weather blows wicked bad.
I used to think I’d like a job like that, but once I really started thinking about it I decided against it. Yes, it would be great to be able to help people, but think about how stressful it would be. My stomach would be messed up and in knots all the time. One wrong piece of advice and it could literally cost someone their life!
I haven’t really heard of anything that they’ve said that was unrealistic, but I have heard them get verbally abused by people. Which is understandable because of the situations people are in. I don’t think it would be for me though.
I have big praise and respect for those of you who can do it.
I get dispatched by 911 Dispatchers for Fire and Ambulance. They have seconds to get the correct address, type of Emergency, how many injured, whats on fire, how long has the person been down, breathing or not! Thats just a few. The public thinks 911 dispatchers are supposed to just send help, but thats not the case. We need to know if its a grass fire, or a Propane Tank, a child not breathing, or someone who needs a Private Ambulance to go to a distant hospital. So cut them some slack, and provide them with the Proper Information when asked. Learn addresses and streets, especially if you are at someones home, or babysitting!
