hard woord problem
You have 12 coins, one of which is counterfeit and weighs less than the legal coins. How can you use a simple balance 3 times to determine which coin is counterfeit?
1)balance two stacks of 3 coins. If one stack weighs less then you know its in that stack. If they both are the same you know its in the left out stack.
2)Once you know which stack its in balance two coins on the scale and if one weighs less than the other you know it is that one. If they both are the same you know it is the excluded coin.
I know this is only using the scale twice but that is how I would do it.
