What does one do in a graphic design program in college?
You’ll likely have to take general fine arts courses at first, which can include art history, art theory, all that boring stuff :P. In addition, you will likely take painting, drawing and some visual art courses, along with that course for digital art - working with photoshop, possibly do a little photography/film. You might be required to take some computer courses as well. I say “likely” and “might” a lot because this is how most the graphic design programs are here where I am, but I’m not entirely sure what they are like where you are, although I’d imagine it would be pretty similar. Be sure you do do your research and go to the open-houses and stuff.

That sounds like a lot of fun, have you taken any courses like that to give me your feedback on if it’s worth taking or not?
I would guess a lot of art and computer related courses, including learning Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. Probably also marketing classes because those tie in with the business part of graphic design.
:D My program is a mix of graphic design and um.. more computer-ey stuff (I cannot think of a word for it haha). Personally, I don’t find much of the art history/theory courses that useful or fun, but I guess it’s always good to have some background knowledge of what you’re doing. Those courses are rather easy, it’s mostly memorizing stuff, and honestly I hated those lectures. I loved the courses where I got to play with photoshop, film and photography. My professor wasn’t that great though, so no one really learned anything from him but it was fun to learn ourselves. We got to work with Illustrator, photoshop, elements, premiere pro, Oh and we did 3-D as well with Autodesk Max 3DS. For those courses :D no exams, mostly assignments and you get to work with people a lot (something I hate). I found the painting/drawing course rather competitive, it was still fun though. That course was actually a little harder since we were expected to produce paintings/drawings within a few classes all the time, it was still fun though. Deadlines suck. I’ve pulled many all-nighters trying to finish a painting. Oh and be prepared to get yourself a laptop, not necessarily a mac, although most people will have macs, but a good one that can run all those programs as you will probably need it for homework. I hate mac, personally, so I bought a good laptop with windows and got my boyfriend to work his geek magic and also put snow leopard on my PC. All in all it’s a fun program, I believe you’ll enjoy it if you enjoy art :)
Thank you for the help!:) I think I would enjoy that a lot, I do like art, photography and all of that, I was thinking of going into The Art Institute college place, I don’t know any other colleges with a program like those. What college do you go to? Maybe they have it here.
You learn to interpret the visual world conceptually, physically, and ideally onto paper or some other 2 or 3-d visual medium.
