Does the government track every site we visit, even our emails?

and can they even do that?

Answer #1

If you give them a reason to they can.

Answer #2

My sister said they do. Honestly I think it’s a unnecessary. Couldn’t they get all our personal info like that? Really irks me if so >.<

Answer #3

Well I don’t know IF they do, but I do know they CAN and WILL do anything they want for whatever reason they want. There is a branch of the government that monitors everything from the internet to cell phone conversations. The system and it’s operational personel are looking for “key words and phrases” and other information that may warrant further looking into. They don’t really care about casual conversations but they are still subject to being monitored. This all went into operation, or the operation was “ramped up” so to speak after 9 / 11.

Answer #7

Oh contrar, laws, ethics and privacy mean nothing to big brother when it comes to national security. Anything they do will be justified one way or another. “I’m just answering a question here big brother, no offense”” Please don’t blow my house up, my wife is inside! and she’s innocent”!!!!

Answer #8

As long as you don’t do anything illegal there is nothing to worry about.

Answer #9

not really. they track what they think is important for national secuirity.

Answer #10

I can only tell you about Germany:

Here, at the moment there is political struggle about whether the government is allowed to.

They want to make internet-provider phone companies save connection data about what web sites you visited when.

The grand constitutional court has already forbidden that they track any of the contents of your internet-connection and e-mail data (unless you are suspect of a crime and there is a court order for surveillance or - of course - if you have contact with a person who is under surveillance).

Paranoid people over here do suspect that all versions of Microsoft Windows and possible also Mac OS (as they are manufactured by US-American companies) have back-doors where the American secret service can spy you. That is why paranoids use stuff like gentoo-linux where you can (theoretically) read and understand all the program source codes and then compile your own operating system out of those, once you are sure it doesn’t have a secret back door for the NSA.
