What was this German dish?

At an international food fair, I tried something from the German food stall. It was red, almost looked like raw meat, perhaps like raw beef or chicken. It had a bit of an herb taste and was salty. It was spread on toast. Does anyone have an idea what this might have been?

I can’t think of anying typically All-German that fits your description. Do you think it was meat? Or something else that looked like meat? If it was red and was meat, then it was probably beef, not chicken.

It must be a a regional thing, because there is no such All-German food.

It could be Carpaccio. (But German people will consider it Italian food then) http://funadvice.com/r/bklkjoh2qoo That is a typical food for the southern Alpine regions (Tyrol, South Austria, North Italy). It’s smoked beef with oil and herbs. Often served with cheese. Yuppie people sometimes make vegetarian versions with beetroot instead of beef.

I wonder if it was herring salad with beets? Beets mixed with slices of onion and herring, all in a mayonnaise dressing? I used to love that as a kid, and still make it today. It’s a lovely reddish purple, the color that comes from beets. I would have forgotten about it except that Rotten Sheep mentioned beetroot here. It’s very salty, and I always eat it with toast or crackers.

Nope it wasn’t meat it just looked like meat and had a really smooth texture,, so it didn’t seem like it was any sort of vegetable.
