Gender neutral policies

My university has what they call a gender neutral policy so that whenever they write exam questions or give examples etc they have to either stay away from specifically male or female names and pronouns, or she or use a roughly equal amount of both male and female ones. I was just curious if this is common in universities and what people think of it? I think they have good intentions but to make it an actual policy seems a bit overly pc to me.

Political Correctness running amok ! - ‘common sense’ a foreign concept.

Depends on the situation. I see little harm in using the gender neutral they instead of him or her. When I worked at a university a dozen years ago they quit calling the head of departments “Chairman” and went to the gender neutral “Chair” Again no real harm here.

It is very easy when giving a hypothetical situation to refer to a doctor as him and a nurse as her even though both occupations can be done by either gender.

One area that I do disagree with is the gender neutral “actor” being used for either male and female people who act. In this capacity men and women are generally not interchangeable. Most of the time a man will not play a female part and vice versa. In this situation I do not believe that it is sexist to refer to a female who acts as an actress rather than an actor. Cases like comedian vs. comedienne and blond vs.blonde should be eliminated because they make grammer and spelling more difficult than it needs to be.

When I was in 1st grade the space program was young. I can still remember my teacher telling us that the men who explore space are astronauts and that while no woman has been to space when they go they will be called astronets. Luckily, by the time women made it to space astronaut was itself considered gender neutral.

Yeah, I agree that it is overly pc. But there are a lot of modern feminists who have forgotten what the movement was traditionally about, and are now out to complain about everything.

Answer #4

Let me ask you something, what happens if you’ve got a sexist teacher who is selectively giving students grades based on their gender? Now in order to fire the person, the university has to have a policy in effect that does not allow discrimination… Agreed the whole exam thing is a little ridiculous (and I agree modern feminists have gone completely overboard) but there are still reasons people do these things…
