Geek Emcee for an office party, any public speaking tips?

I’m tasked by my boss to emcee on our christmas party. I don’t know what to do. I’m an IT geek and have no prior experience in public speaking to a large crowd. What must I do?

Remember to relax when you present, talk, and make jokes to the crowd. Make sure to take deep breaths, and try not to be nervous. The group won’t expect anything amazing, funny, or wonderful out of you, so as long as you talk clearly, be friendly, and speak well, you’ll do fine.

If possible, try to make a few comical insights into stuff that people have said at the office, keeping in mind not to hurt people’s feelings. Generally, when I speak in front of a group, I try to get them to laugh at least once (even if it’s at my expense) so that I know they are engaged & listening.
