What will we see next in the next gaming console from Sony?

Will it be called a PS4? I think the PS3 was so ahead of it’s time. I mean nobody knew that Blu-Ray was gonna be popular back when Sony decided to put a Blu-Ray player in the PS3, yet they took that gamble and now finally Blu-Rays are starting to rival sales of regular DVD’s and surpass them in popularity in some markets. I think the PS3 could go another 5-7 or more years until a new technology that will replace Blu-Ray will come along and some sorth of virtual reality gaming would be invented that will look real. Otherwise an upgrade to the PS3 will be just evolutionary in nature and not revolutionary like when the PS3 first came out. Sorry, I guess I answered my own question!! :)

The PS3 with its cell processor is dreadfully difficult to develop software for. It is believed that no games out there use all its capacity because of this. While technically advanced the PS3 is still behind the XBox and Wii in sales. Lack of RAM is one of the problems developers bang their heads into. Expanding RAM could extend the viable life of PS3s. There has been some talk of a PS3+ that would be an incremental improvement with more RAM and possibly other minor enhancements. It may be possible to upgrade current PS3’s to PS3+ in this case. On one hand Sony might decide to stay with the PS3 since its full potential has not been unlocked yet but on the other hand since PS3 sales have lagged the XBox and Wii it may be in Sony’s best interest to get a jump on their competitors and be the first to release their 8th generation game console. If Sony could significantly reduce the price of PS3s that would help them grab market share. To me that would be their best option at this point.

From what I have read Sony went WAY over board with R&D on the PS3. And Sony does have a habit of releasing hardware that is very innovative and hard to code for. You can see it by just looking at the games for during the transition from he PS to the PS2. First gen PS2 games look worse than last gen PS games (for the most part) Same thing happen with the PS2 to PS3 transition.. So for the PS4 they are going to be using additional things they learned in R&D for the PS3. From my understanding its basically going to be a PS3 on steroids. Crank up the ram (PS3 biggest fault) and add some more cell processors. That should give the software developers another generation to figure out how to max out the PS3/4 potential.
