Why is my friend the only person in her family with black hair and hazel eyes?

Maybe she was switched at birth.

Sometimes genes can come from generations before, and it might not come from your parents. Ex. You grandparents could have brown eyes, and high cheekbones. You parents have blue eyes, and no noticeable cheek bones. You end up having the high cheekbones and brown eyes. Sometimes they can mix sometimes they don’t.

I’m the only person in my family with brown hair and green/hazel eyes. My dad is black hair blue eyed and my mom was blond hair blue eyes. Everyone in the family was the same also way back.

It’s just the way that genes work, she may be the only one in her immediate family with those colours but I bet if you searched through her family tree, you’d find a few people like great aunts or 3rd cousins twice removed or whetever with dark hair and greener eyes. My mother has read hair and blue eyes on her side, my father was a dark man with brown eyes and black hair. I’m green eyes and naturally blonde hair so I guess anything can happen haha

That actually happens VERY often- babies are given to the wrong parents.

Maybe the hair-color and eyes “skipped” one generationn? Say, maybe her gran and gramps have the same hair/eye color as she is? On the other hand, maybe she was switched when she was a baby? It’s quite a common case.

It can be from her grandparents or from more remote ancestors. Looks sometimes miss a generation or even several generations.

Then it happens that babies get switched in hospital.

Or she might be adopted and not know about it. Parents sometimes have reasons to keep that secret from a child.

And of course there are children who look more like the mailman than like their daddy. I don’t know her mom, and I don’t want to suspect anyone I don’t know. No offense. But u know, those things happen more often than you believe… There’s one in every village.
