Was Freddie Mercury gay?

does anybody know if Freddie mercury was gay? or was he bi? I heard in a report that he was criticised for having kept his ethnicity, as well as his sexual orientation and HIV status, a secret from the public. I have no idea what that means

Answer #1

I agree with you editor. It is up to each person to decide to share info about their health issues. Being a public figure doesn’t mean that it is your “duty” to divulge.

Answer #3

He acknowledged one female partner in his life, Mary Austin. Not sure if ONE girlfriend makes him ‘bisexual’ as rnealw states.

Answer #4

Actually Freddie was bi-sexual. . . He was the Queen of Queen. . . Good singer and song writer. . .to bad he had to die. . . You get a hint of some of his sexual flavor in this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58CJih1iYC0 This is among the last videos he did and HIV was beginning to take a toll on him. . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOJPvxgkvn8&feature=related And this is one of the more fun videos.. . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrADb7CHDsc&feature=related

Yup and he also died from AIDS if I remember correctly.

From Wikipedia:

By the mid-1970s, the singer began an affair with a male record executive at Elektra Records.

By 1980, Mercury began to frequently visit gay bathhouses and clubs, where he met many short-term partners. Mercury also began to grow a moustache around this time. By 1985 he began another long-term relationship with a hairdresser named Jim Hutton. Hutton, who himself tested HIV-positive in 1990, lived with Mercury for the last six years of his life, nursed him during his illness and was present at his bedside when he died.

According to his partner Jim Hutton, Mercury was diagnosed with HIV in the spring of 1987. Around that time, Mercury also claimed in an interview to have tested negative for the virus. Despite the denials, British press pursued the rampant rumours over the next few years, fueled by Mercury’s gaunt appearance, Queen’s lack of touring and by reports from former lovers to various tabloid journals. Toward the end of his life, he was routinely stalked by photographers, while the daily tabloid newspaper The Sun featured a series of articles claiming that he was seriously ill.

Mercury died on November 24, 1991 at the age of 45. The official cause of death was bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS.

It also discusses the controversy from him hiding the disease, he only admitted he had it the day before he died. Apparently, people are angry that he hid it for so long because he could have raised money for the disease.

Personally, I think it was his choice and just because he’s a public figure doesn’t mean he should have to divulge every aspect of his personal life. What do you think?
