What is the best format of resume to use if you are mid senior career level ?

I have more job experience and companies you have worked for, than you want to put on a resume. If I listed every thing I have done, with all the companies I have worked for I would be sending out a book versus a couple page resume. I would just like a section with larger projects I have worked, but I seem to be lost one what format I should use. Right now I have Qualifications and just bullets with keywords, than Employment history, and I have this down to under two pages, followed by Education which is also about 6 bullets. Need help.

The last time I applied for a job was in 2006, at the time, I’d only been in full time work for about six years.

However, the first real job I had was when I was 11 years old, and I worked about 25 hours / week the last 2 years of high school, and had more than one job at a time the last 3 years of college - needless to say, I had TONS of work experience as a result in many fields.

Depending on what job you apply for, you tailor the resume to that particular job. Eg, if you have loads of experience at two things, but the job you’re applying for only needs deep skills in one of those things, only list those things that mean the most for that particular job. The way I’ve always seen it done is a resume should be a one page summary of “why you’re a great fit”….the page should highlight enough to make the employer want to talk to you.

After about five years of reviewing resumes, hiring people, interviewing business partners and helping other companies hire to replace our consulting firm (we did that about a half dozen times), I’ve decided that the resumes that are the best are those that speak to the position - only. Ignore the stuff that, while it’s things you have done, don’t help to entice the employer into talking to you.

One guy I helped hire actually wrote about winning a video game competition. That had zero to do with the job, but, it showed that he was competitive, driven and could focus on the task at hand. Combined with his work experience (which was relevant) and his educational background (more or less relevant) I said we had to interview him and he got the job.

If you’re not on Linkedin, btw, I think you’re missing out - most professionals I know are on there, and it’s a great way to get requests even when you’re not looking for work, or to share what you know, etc.

There is a difference between a résumé and a curriculum vitae. While a CV literally is your life story a résumé is more of an advertisement selling yourself. When you are in the market for a car the salesperson does not hand you a book of engineering drawings and specifications; they hand you a glossy pamphlet telling that this is a great car made with innovative yet proven design by happy employees at a financially solid company that stands behind their product. For résumés the typical format is to get all the good stuff on the first page with some more details on the 2nd page.

Well I am not looking for a career, or job at this time, I was just looking at my resume I wrote 3 years ago and wondering how I every got hired with it, while it is very technical, it is also very wordy. I am on linked in and I have past people I have worked with, but I do not seem to use it like I should.
