How can you tell if you're foot is broken or just sprained?

I was walking down the stairs when I tripped, got up, and if thats not enough, tripped over the cat who decided that the bottom of the stairs was better than the basket of warm laundry I was going to get, I was fine except for minor pains but I sat down earlier and now I can’t get up from the pain. It has bruised a horrible dark blue/purple color and is swelling slightly.

If your foot is broken, you won’t be able to stand on it at all! If it’s sprained, it will hurt, but you can at least sit it on the ground and put a lil weight on it.

Answer #2

youve either reaally badly sprained it, torn a tendon or more, or broken it.i would say either tore some tendons or broke it (which is bad). ive torn both my ankels and they both swelled up and went a purple/blue colour a bit, there were also very painfull and i couldnt walk on them. youll need to go to a doctor asap, if youve broken anything it needs to be fixed right away so it heals properly. if youve torn tendons the doctor will tell you what to do and how to eventually get your ankles stronger after that. for now put some ice on it and keep your foot elevated. dont walk on it. and get someone to take you to see a doctor or even to the hospital as soon as possible

Answer #3

Actually, if it was broken you WOULD be able to walk on it, i broke my foot, ankle & 3toes all at once, and didnt even notice until 3 days later.

Answer #4

Oh well thats just how it was when I broke mine bc I didnt know the difference either but I guess it’s different for everyone then lol

Answer #5

wow, it’ll be hard to ask dad to take me to the doctors, he saw the bruise but he thinks that all it is, a bruise. I’ll admit I;m a bit of a drama queen but this is different! I hardly ever cry but this thing has caused me to cry twice :’( plus it’s 2 am here

Answer #6

If you can make a circle with your ankle (it will hurt like hell, trust me) but if you have the ability to, it aint broken. if you can not move it, like its kind of locked in place almost, then see a doc soon.

Answer #7

The thing is, a sprain is actually worse than a fracture, so if you suspect either, you should go to a doctor. When you break a bone, it heals better than a sprain becase bone has an excellant blood supply, whereas connective tissue like tendons and ligaments have a very poor blood supply - most of the nutrients have to diffuse through and as a result, they take a very long time to heal.

Answer #8

Lol you must be on some pain killers or something.
