Can fish drown?

Just wondering, i mean they live in water right? so they can’t drownd?

Answer #1

No .. O.O

Answer #2

No they cannot drown. It’s ‘drown’ by the way :P. There’s oxygen in the water that they use. However, if the oxygen within the water is no longer there, the fish can drown/die,

Answer #3

:P i did have drown to start with, but i thought it looked funny and changed it :P

Answer #4

And here we have it folks, yet ANOTHER question of the day!!

No, fish can’t drown because they live in water. Just like I can’t drown while I’m sitting in my room because I live in air.

Answer #5

Yes. Fish needs oxygen & other gases for survival and the water in which they live, run out of air then fish will drown. They can also drown if their gills malfunction.

Answer #6

Fish gather the oxygen from the water. Their gills are like feathers and the tips separate the hydrogen molecules from the oxygen. Drowning is basically lack of oxygen in your chest cavity so yeah they could if the water is mucky. It will ruin the ‘feathers’ in the gills causing them to not be able to gather oxygen causing them to sufficate or technically drown, but if the water is normal and conditioned for them then no they do not.

Answer #7

Actually most CAN’T but some species of fish CAN drown.

Fish pump water through their gills. And the gills extract oxygen from the water. (Of course all fish could “drown” in water that has insufficient oxygen. Just like we can suffocate in air that does not have enough oxygen.)

A few shark subspecies however have rather primitive gills and they can’t pump water through them, so they have to keep moving all the time. If they stop they can’t breathe. So they usually swim all of the time, even when they sleep. If something forces them to stop moving, then they drown. http://funadvice.com/r/1568uc5edej

Answer #8

Objection, your Honor!!! Some subspecies of shark actually can drown if they stop moving. http://funadvice.com/r/1568uc5edej

Answer #9

you got that right bro! lol

Answer #10

I have to disagree with you, fish can drown. If you pull them back by their tales then the water will go into their gills, this then means they can not breath; leading to drowning.

Answer #11

Erm… hannah, fish breathe by pumping fresh water into their gills. Gills are organs that filter solved oxygen out of the water. Fish need water in their gills.

Answer #12

I have read that betta fish have a very primitive “lung” and can actually drown if you don’t leave a bit of open air at the top of their tank.

Answer #13

why do we wash fish? if they were in the water?

Answer #14

Aside from the fact that, yes - fish can drown, it’s still a funny question ;)

Answer #15

The definition of drown according to dictionary.com is to die under water OR other liquid of suffocation. So yes, if fish are in a liquid (it is not specific to water) and die in that liquid due to suffocation they can drown.

Answer #16

Yes they can, Look at dolphins and whales who must surface periodically to breathe.

Answer #17

Hannah is 100% correcr I also learned the exact same thing. Water is filtered through the gills uniformly and if you pull them back there is no way the water can filter in and out of the gills they just get filled up with water causing them to drown.

Answer #18

God bless

Answer #19

lol Connor that was mean.

Answer #20

Stratification of a body of water can cause fish to run out of oxygen and “drown” if we can call it that.
