Why do my eyes get bloodshot when I am over-tired?

I’ve noticed that when I don’t have much sleep for a couple of days (the past few days I haven’t been going to sleep until 2-3am and getting up at 7am) my eyes get all bloodshot, and I was just wondering why this happens? Thanks!

Answer #1

It’s not just you - that happens to everybody. When you’re overtired, you lack sufficient oxygen, which, in turn, causes blood vessels to become inflamed. The “bloodshot” appearance is actually inflamed blood vessels in the eyes.

Ahhh, I have seen the light. Thanks :)
