What is ethernet controller?

Answer #1

Hi,

Has your motherboard got a rear connector for LAN? Local Area Networking…and it’s where you connect a network cable to the system. The socket will be like a phone socket, only wider. The circuitry controlling that function will be your ‘Onboard LAN’ or ‘Onboard Networking’, or the socket itself may be on a ‘Network Card’ rather than being a rear panel connector.

If you’re using dial-up internet and you only have a single PC, then it’s no good for anything at all, and would be best disabled.

But if you want to connect another system to it to share files, printer and internet you’ll need to use it. And if you decide to upgrade to broadband internet at some stage in the future you’ll be happy to have it as well. A broadband modem connected to an Ethernet port is a much better and more reliable connection than one connected to USB!

Hope that helps!
