Ear Antibiotic Application
What is the best way, to apply a liquid antibiotic to a dogs ears, without him getting really upset and fighting it?My Chihuahua, has a bacterial and a yeast infection in his ears, but I can’t get him to sit still long enough, to put them in his ears, and I don’t want to hurt him.The second he sees the bottle, he freaks out and tries to bolt on me. My husband and I have tried treats, distracting him, cradling him and holding his head against the chest , wrapping him in a blanket to limit his movement, and nothing is working! This is the first time he has ever had any medical problems! Any suggestions or tips, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Everyone!
Either set the meds on an end table, next to where you will be administering them…or slip them into your pocket…without the lid on.
Pick up the dog, sit down with his back to you…coo…pet…assure…not in a high pitch but a low soothing pitch…approach his ears from the back, and be quick…You can even cover his eyes with your hand (he’s small enough)…When it’s over GIVE HIM A TREET…a reward. Once he knows he’s not about to be hurt (and I imagine his ears are tender)…he’ll be more cooperative…unfortunately, it takes a few times, for them to “get it”.
My dog is so big, that I have to use chicken jerky… I hold the jerky in front of his nose with one hand, to focus his attention, and with the bottle in my other hand, I slide in from behind, and drop the drops…don’t be afraid of getting 3 drops instead of 2, or whatever the precription calls for…Your chi’s ears are uppies, so anything you get in there will drip to where it needs to be.

I would sit him/her down in my lap, and hum a song as I’m rubbing his/her temples, very tenderly, mine would fall asleep while I cradle him/her…rub with one hand and give drops in ear with other hand…it works 4 me…then softly rub towards the ear you put the medicine in, so they don’t get alarmed…when your done, give treat & say good boy/girl…give a lot of praise…dichihuahua
lol, I have the same problem with my cat, your dog is small enough to hold with one hand, your little and fourth finger around one leg, your first two fingers around the neck and you thumb over the back (should completely immobalize him…)
