Words that have the 'e' before the 'I'?

this is really dumb and random but this just popped in my head. are there any words that break the “I” before “E” except after “C” rule? I don’t know why but htat just popped in my head.

Answer #1

What a mess! Remember the full rule, folks:

I before E except after C or when sounded as ‘AY’ as in neighbor and weigh.

In fact the main exceptions are ‘seize’ and ‘weird’ plus ‘either’ and ‘neither’ Proper names like Keith don’t necessarily following regular spelling rules..

Answer #2

OH my gosh, that was really dumb of me, I did not even catch that I did that, Thanks. However, she is asking what words break the rule “ I before e except after c”

Words that FOLLOW the rule species, science, sufficient, ancient

Words that DON’T follow the “rule of thumb” receive, ceiling, conceit, and ofcourse Conceive

Answer #3

As I understand it, she was asking if there are any words that don’t fall under the “except after C rule”…she wasn’t asking whether or not there had to be a “C”, just if there were other rules that qualify…which there are.

And it’s conceive, not concieve.

Answer #4

No pwincess, she means like I before E excepth after C like the word Concieve. The I comes before the e following the c. And yes there are words that break this “rule” receive,” “ceiling,” “conceit

Sorry Ichibanarky, but there are no C’s before the E’s or I’s in your words.

species, science, sufficient, ancient – these words follow the rule of thumb,

(Sorry if this message comes twice, my computer sometimes messes up like that :P ) Ceiling, Conceit and Conceive don’t count, do they? Because they follow the rule by being after C. “I before E except after C”

Answer #10

Ceiling, Conceit and Conceive don’t really count, do they? Because they are after C.
