Drums\bass\band help!

Ok me and my two friends have started a band (me=rhythm, vocals, edwared=lead guitar, lewis=percussion), and two things are bothering me…

  1. Lewis has never played drums before (apparently he had lessons when he was younger but I think hes forgotten them all lol) so I suggested he play just a snare drum (like from a marching band) because then at least we could have a beat and most simple drum parts can be imitated with just the snare, and he could stand up and move around because I think were aiming for a sort of punk sorta thing. Do you think this is a good idea? Why or why not?

  2. We have no bass guitar, everyone I talk to says that you need a bass to keep everyone together, but I thought that was what the drums were for! We have gone pretty well so far without a bass so we dont really need one do we?

I’d say, your ‘drummer’ should have a kick and snare, minimum. A bassist, together with a kick drum, will really punch that bass and enhance the sound way more than having neither. The idea is to play music where the kick and bass play at the same time. It’s all about what the audience hears on the other side. Without that simple technique, your listener(s) will hear a pretty empty sounding band. Similar to listening to the radio with the bass turned all the way down and the treble turned all the way up. Like listening to a band through your phone. No fun.

Take your time with the process. Plan your work, and work your plan. :-)

  1. the drum thing is good for now but like beans said. he should learn how to play a kit as soon as possible. drums are pretty easy to learn, especially since you said you are a punk band. punk beats are like the easiest thing on drums.

  2. the bass thing. you could either A. play without a bassist B. play without a bassist and then when you find one just stick him in with the band C. find a decent guitarist (know the notes on the guitar, simple riffs) and put a bass in his hand. Bass is the EASIEST thing in the world to learn. trust me, I can play MANY instruments.

Starting a band is a good idea, and if he starts on a snare drum, that would work. But I would suggest he quickly get drum lessons so that he can learn at least play a simple beat, it will really help everyone else to progress if he can at least put 1 beat together and start learning to keep time without any metronome. and you don’t need bass guitar, but it helps with the rythm of a song and gives a fuller feeling. Hope I helped ( : BEANS

I think its a good idea to make a band you never know you could go far all you can do is practice as much as you can maybe in your free time is the best even when your at school you can ask your music teacher if he/she could spare some time to teach you all ask your teachers if they know how to play there instroments it might work they do that at my school just try then you’ve got a chance but if you dont try then nothing will work you cant always do things yourself sometimes you’ve got to ask for help but dont ditch your mate’s because they cant play the you will be solo just remember practice makes perfect
