How do I make a net for a torus?

For extra credit we can bring in a net for a torus (doughnut) by the end of next week. (A net is where you have a 2-D figure that you can fold into a 3-D figure). Does anyone know how to make one??? One way our book showed was to roll a piece of paper into a cylinder and bend it around, but that doesn’t work very well because the paper dents in. I’ve heard you make a flower or something, but am not quite sure how to do it and I need this extra credit! Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!!

At your age, you are probably looking at the torus as part of an introduction to Topology.

Although you mention a doughnut shape, any solid three dimensional structure with just one hole through it is topologically equivalent to a perfect “circular” torus.

I feel confident that you could figure out a design for a “square” torus yourself - just make something that folds into a shape like a square “picture frame” - if necessary, I will draw a design and post a picture on the FunAdvice Gallery.

However, you may find that this .pdf document is more use to you so that you can either solve the square torus problem yourself, (look on page 5 of the document) or even attempt the more adventurous polyhedral “Origami” torus whose design is shown on page 7

It is actually only extra credit for geometry. My friend figured something out and you draw it like a flower or something like that. I don’t really know. I might just talk with her to learn how to do it. I did a lot better on the test than I thought I was going to do and don’t really even need the extra credit now. Thanks for the help though! :)
