dominance in dogs

I have a 5 1/2 month old puppy. it is 3/4 chichuahua and 1/4 poodle. I also have a 12 year old sheltie. the sheltie does NOT enjoy the new puppy. he barked and growled at it until recently. now the sheltie is ALL over the new puppy. like licking it, following it around and trying to stradle and hump it. im not sure what this is about? its like my dog turned gay. my brother said it had to do something with dominance. is that true? and how can I stop it from happening?

Answer #1

is it also okay if the sheltie does like humping motions?

Answer #2

alright thanks. because everyone in my family is making a big deal a bout it. and yelling at the sheltie and saying STOP BEING GAY ITS GROSS. but I just keep saying its not a big deal, just let them work it out amonst themselves. its nothing to worry about. so it usually ends in a big argument. so thanks now I know im atleast right for the most part. :]

No…it’s nothing but a dominance posture…your sheltie is telling the pup in “dog speak”, who is the boss…As the pup matures, this behavior will either stop or it will at least lessen…

For the time, just tell the Sheltie, “NO OFF”, and push him away…letting him know that YOU don’t appreciate his behavior… it’s not anything to worry about, tho…so I’d keep discipline to just this. In the end, it ALWAYS works out better if the dogs are talking to each other…and this is just part of that “talking”.
