dog walking while pregnant

I am 16 wks pregnant. I have a rambunctious 1 y/o Boxer. Is it ok for me to walk him on a leash? He pulls & jerks a lot, very hard for me to control. I would love to take him out, but am scared it may hurt the baby. Is this safe?

Answer #1

If it is a level of activity that you partook in before pregnant, you can continue with that level of activity while pregnant. (e.g. if you run five miles every day and always have, you can continue to do so. If you don’t, don’t try to start after you’re pregnant.)

Find a way to correct the jerking/pulling/tugging. ANY dog can be corrected of this it just takes the right tools. Try a head lead (a collar that fits over their face, but it’s not a muzzle) or body harness (that’s what I use for my lab) or pinch collar (when used properly they work VERY well with rambunctious dogs and as long as you use them responsibly they are safe and 100% non-harmful to the dog - I used this with my dog when she was a hyper 1 year old), or an “easy walk” harness which redirects the dog to one side or the other when it tries to pull. There are MANY different tools for dogs that are difficult to walk - don’t just give up! (Though if he is literally dragging you to the floor and harming you I of course recommend having help while training him to walk nicely, though I still encourage to train him to where you can walk him, not just decide to not do it.)

Answer #2

I would try the pinch collar if I were you. People sometimes give these a bad rep but they are only bad when used improperly. They are great when used correctly. If all else fails call Cesar Milan! (I’m not kidding, he’s wonderful with dogs and seems to hold a high regard for people who are trying to include their dogs as a part of the family while keeping everyone safe.)

Answer #3

Thanks for the great advice. I currently use a regular body harness, which doesn’t seem to do much good. I will try some of the different collars/tools.

Answer #4

Never put yourself in a situation where you and the child could be hurt. If the dog is that strong he could pull you down and hurt you and/or your unborn baby. Have someone else to walk him for you. It is not worth the risk. You and baby come first.

Answer #5

if you’re worried that you might hurt the baby, don’t. Period.

Answer #6

I too am pregnant and have two Boxers, one does not really pull and the other pulls hard. We currently use a choke chain and it does very little to stop the pulling. I recommend the lead that goes around the face as it pulls the dog’s neck around everytime they pull. Your dog will not like it at first, but you they will get use to it. Plus you have to think about your comfort level while pregnant.
