Dog having puppies.

My dog is having puppies and she gave birth to one about 45min ago, she does not seem interested in cleaning or nursing. Is this normal? Also how long before she has the other pups? Also there is a little bloody discharge. This is the first time for her. Our other dog had no problem. She does not want to stay in the welping pen. What to do now?

Answer #1

How are the puppies and mother doing now?

Answer #2

it is not normal for them to not clean them up, it is normal for them to not really bother with the pups until the mother is done with labor. I hope you cleaned the pup and I would try to get it to suck on a nipple, but she should nurse them when she is done, if she does not then you will have a busy, long 3-4 weeks ahead of you. Just try to comfort her and teach her what she needs to do. Put the puppy in front of her and if she licks it then praise her. Did you have a x-ray done to know how many to expect? Is she activly pushing and no puppy is coming, if so she needs to go to a vet if it has been more then 15-20 mintues, if she is not actively pushing then she should be fine and just resting.

Answer #3

How many puppies is she expecting, and what breed is she? I don’t have much experience in this department, but the other members from the Dog group aren’t online at the moment. I know that some dogs can take a short break and start again. If she’s a smaller breed dog, she may be having trouble (I.e. puppy is stuck).

You should call your vet for quick advice on the phone. Through a series of questions, your vet can probably also advise you if your dog should be brought in for assistance in the birthing.

Also in the mean time bring the puppy up to its mommy’s nose to hopefully encourage her to lick/clean it. Keep the puppy warm too. But yeah, call the vet now.

Answer #4

give her a bit of time, sometimes the mom isn’t interested in the baby if she’s in labor still. keep the baby warm right now, and clean it up if its possible. I would advice you to call your vet, asap if you can and get some advice from the professionals. good luck and congrats!!!

Answer #5

The dog is a labrador. And I think she will have 7-9 pups.
