Does appearance matter when finding a job?

I have black hair and a nose ring…will this prevent me from finding a job? Im looking for a part time job nothing fansey.

Answer #1

Appearance always matters - you’re in effect ‘representing the business/company with potential clients/customers who come in contact with you - you only get one chance to make a first impression - dress for success !!

Answer #2

I guess what I ment is they are not going to say ‘ Oh we are not going to hire you because of the way you look’ But they may ask you to change something. Like for instance amandarose90 said they made her ex shave. The can ask you to take you nose ring out. And more that likely they will :)

Answer #3

They can’t not hire you because of they way you look. That is called discrimination. The whole thing about the nose ring is the fear of it falling into, perhaps food, and it may look bad to some some people . But you can get the plugs and they are clear and you can put them in place of you nose ring while you are at work.

Answer #4

The nose ring will cut your chances. I heard there are these plug things that you can put in your piercing so they can’t see it.

The people that hire out there think piercings are a bad thing… imagine that :( They need to get more modern :)

if you want to work at a record store, you may be able to get hired, or perhaps a mod type hair stylist, otherwise if you choose an alternate life style, then SLEEP IN THE BED THAT YOU MADE!!! I am sure you had plenty of people warn you of extreme looks and a good job…same goes for these disgusting BOYS that wear their pants around their knees. It is not cool, it is disgusting. I had a busboy in a dennys one time that wore his pants like that. It was plainly grossing out the customers. I asked the busboy to pull his pants up as it was gross to see and unprofessional, he just gave me a dirty look and continued on his freaky way. The customer next to me agreed. I called the manager over and explained it. he spoke to employee and he pulled up his pants untill the mgr went about his business. at that time the busboy pulled his pants down again, I walked up to him and told him sternly, “IF WE WANTED TO SEE $HT STAINS AND A$$HOLES WHILE WE EAT, WE WOULD EAT DINNER FROM OUR DOGS BUTTS! NOW PULL UP YOUR PANTS YOU DISGUSTING SLOB!” You could hear the applause from the diners! At that time the manager returned I told him what the punk had done and I insisted he be fired. After the mgr took this freak to the back, he was fired and called out f_ you to all the custs on his way out. With his mentality, it’s a wonder how he even got a job as a busboy!

So, good luck, keep the extremism to off work time anfd look professional at work.

Answer #6

Actually they can choose not to hire you based on your appearance. There’s no law against discriminating against people’s personal choices when it comes to appearance… For example abercrombie and fitch has rules against facial hair, non natural colored hair, tattoos and piercings for their sales people and models… You’re obviously likely to have a harder time finding a job in like a strict office, but it doesnt mean you wont be able to find one. You may want to start looking at places that sell alternative stuff, hot topic etc… If you’re old enough, bartenders make good money…

And it depends on where you work - they may or may not have a policy against long hair
