Does anyone know anything about pet rats?
I’m going to have pet rats for my birthday, I have been on loads Of sites and things to get info, but still not sure about being an actual Owner of them. I have kept many pets and have a couple now, but I think I need First hand advice from someone who has them, to help me out.
I’ve had 4 pet rats. first I had 2. cotton and candy. there very controlable anmails. they are smart and they get to know you. but you have to talk to them. I always talked to mine. and they turned out to be very specil anmails. then I got 2 more after they died. oh and rats usally live about 1 in a half to about 2 years. but after cotton and candy died I got ginger and snowball. they wer the same way. and there dead now to but im getting more for my birthday. december 12. and I haven’t thought of there names yet. but ill think of some names soon!
These people are saying rats have too many babies. If you have a male and female dog that aren’t fixed they will also have babies. And if you have male and female cats, they will have babies too! Wow! It’s amazing how that works! Don’t get boy and girl rats. Thats
obvious. I had three girls and they were my favorite pets of all time. I would still have rats but I live in an apartment now. If you want more advice just send me a message and I hope you have fun with your ratties!
First…I’ve never met a rat I didn’t like…I think they make great pets.
phrannie
PS…why not get two females or two males…leave the “breeding” to the rat breeders…at least until you figure out what to do with them…
My sister and I had pet rats. Notice the HAD. We will never get them again, nor will our kids, grandkids or great grandkids. They say multiply like rabbits right??? They obviously never had rats.
I used to have a mouse and the mouse and rats are similar so you can get your rats wood chips for the bottom of the cage and tissues WITHOUT lotion cause that is dangerous just regular tissues is what you need just put a certain amount of tissues in the cage and the rats will make a nest and give your rats the right amount of tissues and give your rats a lot of attention and pick your rats up a lot and give your rats plenty of food and get your rats a water bottle you know those things that hang on the cage with water in it and the animal reaches up and takes a drink and do NOT use a dish for for holding water. for more info. funmail me!:)
The more attention you give your new rats when you first get them home, the sooner they will get used to your voice and your smell and begin to make friends with you. Handle your rats as much as possible, whether they seem to like it or not at first – they will soon learn to enjoy your company. Unless a rat is very nervous or unwell, you cannot give it too much attention or handling. One good way of getting your rats used to you is to let them ride around the house on your shoulder or inside your sweater.
I don’t have one… but I know ALL about them and my best friend has two of them. first of all…

Rats make wonderful pets. They are clean, neat, and tidy. There is no need to give them a bath, because they wash themselves. But you can put them in the tub if there is only 2 inches of water.
-
Change their litter every week. Give them LOTS of fresh water, and rat pellets or mix in a container from the pet store. Also give them lots of fresh fruits and vegetables every day. Here’s a list of their favorites:
-
strawberries
-
apples
-
cucumbers
-
walnuts 5.lettuce
- Talk to your rats every day. Let them smell your fingers. Sit by their cage and sing or just talk outloud / read outloud. Also, let them out every day. Rats LOVE to sit on your shoulder, scramble along your neck, and lick your ears. The are athletic, sporty, cute, and funny to watch. You MUST let them out for excersize, or they will get fat and lazy.
Hope I helped! :)

They make very good pets actually. . . . I use to have one that would actually play like a dog or cat. . . . . http://www.mypetrat.com/ http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/careofrats/a/ratsaspets.htm
They are great pets and easy going. . . . I suggest a male. a female will attract wild rats, and the male is easier going.
* They say multiply like rabbits right??? They obviously never had rats.
When I would have that problem I would sell the Babys to the pet store in exchange for supplies.
well I have rats and I love them! ithink they’re great pets but you really need to handle them often so they’ll be friendly. they love peanut butter and rice crispy treats those make good treats. they’ll need wooden toys to chew on and cant have any pine or ceidar bedding because it could make them sick. im not really sure what else to tell you but if you have any more spacific questions feel free to ask
just that rats are cleaner than mice
