Does anybody like Fireflies by Owl City??

You would not believe your eyes If ten million fireflies Lit up the world as I fell asleep — The fireflies are a metaphor for one good thing or multiple good things in his life right now. By falling asleep he means he didn’t even see the good things. He was oblivious to them.

‘Cause they’d fill the open air And leave teardrops everywhere You’d think me rude But I would just stand and stare — He suddenly realizes what is right in front of him and the teardrops/fireflies comparison is a beautiful and bizarre thing, one of those rare moments in life where he just has to watch.

I’d like to make myself believe That planet Earth turns slowly It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay Awake when I’m asleep ‘Cause everything is never as it seems — Saying the Earth turns slowly means he wants time to go by slower, so he has longer to watch the fireflies and the world slows down with him, for he is just standing and watching in a calm silence.

‘Cause I’d get a thousand hugs From ten thousand lightning bugs As they tried to teach me how to dance — The good things (fireflies) would teach him how to dance through life and live it better.

A foxtrot above my head A sock hop beneath my bed A disco ball is just hanging by a thread — Examples of what he’d do in life. It’s more just part of the song and has less meaning.

He was walking through it asleep and now he’s finally awaking.

Leave my door open just a crack (Please take me away from here) ‘Cause I feel like such an insomniac (Please take me away from here) Why do I tire of counting sheep (Please take me away from here) When I’m far too tired to fall asleep — Now that he’s seen what his life really is he can’t go back to being ‘asleep’, to being the zombie. He wants to get out of that life but doesn’t know how.

To ten million fireflies I’m weird ‘cause I hate goodbyes I got misty eyes as they said farewell — The good things in his life are leaving now. He woke up too late; when he was asleep he led himself to this.

But I’ll know where several are If my dreams get real bizarre ‘Cause I saved a few and I keep them in a jar — He has hope though.
