When a doctor sees your cuts during a physical can he/she tell your parents or does that come under doctor/patient confidentiality?

So… I cut myself. And I have to get a physical so that I can take my permit test. Up untill last year I didn’t cut deep enough to show the scars but this past year and a half I went through a lot of stuff and you can see my scars pretty damn well. I want to know if, when the doctor sees my cuts, he can tell my parents. I’m 18 but I’m still under my parents health insurance. I really need to know because if he can tell my parents I need to go buy a lot of makeup/coverup.

You’re 18. Thus you automatically get doctor/patient confidentiality. A lot of people get confused about stuff like this. State laws vary, but in the majority of states, parents have access to medical records. Once you’re 18, they no longer can access them without permission.

oh, and have you thought about therapy?

Answer #3

Okay, good. Thank you for your information. And I have but I wouldn’t have any way to pay for it. Then my parents would have to pay for it, I’d have to explain why I cut, which would open up a huge situation that I just don’t want to open. For now my best friend helps out a lot. Cutting becomes more of an addiction than an “ailment” after awhile. Not many people really understand it untill they go through it. It just becomes cyclical. I’m not too worried at this point though. Thank you so much for your concern though. I appreciate it.

oh, and more because I am philosophically opposed to this than anything else, if you go to a college/university, you need to be careful with seeing a doctor at the college clinic (if they have a clinic), they can and most likely will report it to some dean, and then they’ll make a huge deal out of it (like trying to kick you out of school if you don’t get therapy), and yeah, that’s not pleasant. On the other hand, maybe it would be helpful to see someone…

Answer #5

There are places that will do therapy low cost. So that is not really an issue if you actually want help. And yes, I am well aware what cutting can become, 12 years has taught me enough.

Answer #6

Eh… I will have to take note of that. I wasn’t at all aware of that. Thank you for the information. That’s kind of a messed up reason to kick someone out of school for though. And maybe in the future. As for right now I’d need to get a job to pay for therapy.

Answer #7

I was trying to remember exactly what the threat was, but it was basically if someone is considered to be a harm to themselves. Yeah, I agree, it was messed up. Ohk, you’re not hearing me. There are low cost places. Places that will do it for $5 - $30 or so. It may take a while to get in, but it is better than not getting help. Talking to your friend may be helping how you feel in the moment, but it isnt solving the problem. Look up community mental health in your area.

Sorry, I’m a little out of it today. I haven’t really slept in a week. I’ll definitely look in to it. And okay, thanks. =)

Answer #9

Given that I had to be threatened with expulsion in order to go (and then I just lied to my therapist for a year), I do understand the reluctance. I’ll be happy with ‘I’ll think about it’.

=D Hehe. I like you. Honestly, you say things in a really… engaging way. I appreciate your help.
