even nuns get them.

They’re not so bad. I work at a nursing school and there’s this lady who teaches the nurses and doctors how to do them, so all she does is get like 15 smear tests done every day.

I actually had to film it because she hired me to make a demo video to prepare the students before the class. Basically what will happen is your doctor will introduce himself or herself (if you don’t already know them) and they’ll ask you to take your top off so they can give you a breast exam. They may have you put your hands on your hips and bend forwards and backwards so they can check for any deformations. then you’ll lay down on the table and they’ll move their hands over your breasts checking for lumps. they are supposed to check your shoulders and your upper arms too just to make sure the lymph nodes are in tact and don’t have lumps.

Then you’ll put your feet up in the holders and they’ll sit in front of you. They’ll put a finger in and feel your ovaries and your fundus. They will milk your urethra to make sure it isn’t draining anything. Then they will insert a scapula, which kinda looks like a duck, it will hold you open so they can shine a light in there and check your cervix. then they will probably use a large cotton swab to get a sample. then they will close you back up and send you on your way.

They don’t hurt or anything. They are just a little bit uncomfortable and you could have some very mild cramps the rest of the day, and your doctor will be prepared for anything emberassing that could happen.

It is important to get the tests done. You will have to get them sooner if you are sexually active. the general rule is to start getting them when you’re 18 or when you start having sex. which ever one comes first.

You shouldn’t be afraid of them.

Agree with the advice above. The tests are really nothing, quick and easy, and the doctors/nurses are professionals who know all about people being embarrassed.

Honest - it could save your life some day!

A Pap smear, also called a Pap test, is a procedure to test for cervical cancer in women. A Pap smear involves collecting cells from your cervix — the lower, narrow end of your uterus.

Detecting cervical cancer early with a Pap smear gives you a greater chance at a cure, should cervical cancer be detected. A Pap smear can also detect changes in your cervical cells that suggest cancer may develop in the future. Detecting these cells early with a Pap smear is your first step in halting the possible development of cervical cancer: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pap-smear/MY00090
