Do not speak ill of the dead

So thoughts about this? If you think a person is a rotten person when they were alive, and have always said so, does death give them a reprieve from what they’ve done? where exactly did this saying come from, and why?

Answer #1

Dead or alive, if I feel a person didn’t have any morals or standards or didn’t respect another human life, I doesn’t deserve my or anyone else’s respect! That is my opinion. Most killers, have no respect for other human beings, but when it become time for himself to die, he fear the very same thing which he brought on to others! I don’t fear death, it would only be sad to say a final goodbye to my loved ones!

Yes, for example Hitler, like Ty mentioned, would you still feel the way you do, when your brothers, sisters and parents were slaughtered by him and you were the only one who survived???

I know hating him forever wont bring them back, accepting that they are gone would be the best for your own mental health, BUT it wont make Hitler a good person just because he is now on the ‘other side” and it would most certainly not change how I feel about him!

Sorry my mistake, was in a hurry:

Answer #3

I personally do not think you should speak ill of the dead there are enough creeps still alive to bad mouth if you feel the need to bad mouth people no any dead can do wrong any more let it go

Answer #4

Well, I agree with informer_220 that this expression probably originated out of superstitious fears more than anything else.

Answer #5

For me, it’s a matter of courtesy…a dead person can’t defend him/herself, therefore, speaking out against that person is wrong - no matter what they may have done.

Everyone has a right to self defense, especially considering nobody knows the real truth but the dead person in question.

Answer #6

Death changes nothing except for the lack of breathing. I have always been amazed that many rewrite history after someone dies… you live a dishonest, mean life…you die…and suddenly you are a saint.

Answer #7

well this was valid when people still thought the dead spirit could come back when spoken ill of…

no death doesnt change anything…

Answer #8

to me death doesn’t change the fact that that person was rotten, so why now that they are dead suddenly show them respect - that is if I care…which when someone dies and they aren’t a close family member usually doesn’t bother/affect me.

Answer #9

Agree with Toadaly and Informer!

So Nobliano, you’re telling me, if a murdered is chased by police and killed in the process, if you speak ill of him, HE WOULD VERY HURT hearing you telling someone that he was an evil person? That is REALLY going to bother you, what a evil killer think of the truth, if he supposedly can hear you??? Amazing!

Answer #10

It is not that we should respect the dead even if they were bad during their lives. It is that we should respect death itself.

Moreover, we have no idea what they are going through now that they are dead. By speaking ill of them, we are making it harder for them. I believe they can still see us and they are hurt when they see disrespect. After all, they are humanbeings. I was taught to pray for everyone even my advice.

Answer #11

Does this include ‘bad mouthing’ people like Hitler? or are they exempt?
