a motel is usually a 1 or 2 story building, and hotels are usually nicer and bigger, with an indoor pool. Motels are also usually in a “U” shape with a parking lot in the ‘U’

A big part of motels is the fact that you get a place for your car. “Motorist hotel” was the origin, I think.

a hotel is like a tall building that has a front entrance and then a bunch of rooms inside, and a motel is a place where the door to your room leads you directly outside
