I always use miss, but i would like to try to call them lady or young lady, but i dont know how they would feel i dont want to upset them lol. What do you think ? Tell me please thank you.

Answer #1

Miss is saying that she isn’t married, and I think Lady is talking to an older woman like 50’s.

In the English language women are commonly addressed as either Miss for unmarried, Mrs (mistress) for married, Ms for neutral, and lady for a more formal address if one’s name is unknown. Most use the term ma’am in English.

In my language, we don’t really call men and women by their marital status very often, instead we prefer calling women “Тетя “ (aunt ). Men we give them the title Uncle or a slang word for grandfather if he is old.

Miss is usually used for young girls in their teens while ‘lady’ is used for older females in their 20s and beyond.

Honorific titles change over time. “Miss” and “Misses” both come from the title “mistress” which is the feminine form of “mister.” Today the original word “mistress” has a lot of connotations so we use the shorter contracted forms. In the past “Master” was a title used for boys or young men much the way “Miss” is now used for girls and young women. The title “master” may have died out from embarrassment of the Baiter family. Officially one uses “miss” to refer to unmarried women and “misses” to refer to married women. Ms. is a recent addition and to be used when the marital status of a woman is unknown or if it is irrelevant such as in a business or official setting. I noticed and mentioned elsewhere that Ms. seems to be dying out. I hear “Ms.” less and less these days with many places using “miss” as the default title regardless of the age or marital status of the woman. The gender neutral honorific title is Mx. or Mixter. This could be used for married, unmarried, men, women, or anything in between. Mx. doesn’t seem to be catching on though.
