Diabetic Dog

How to feed diabetic dog that won’t eat?

Answer #1

Also try to avoid foods that are mostly starch, stick to the ones that list protein first. remember, starch is converted to sugar in the system. that is why most diabetics are limited to one starch per meal. A meal of table food, controlled, with veggie, meat and a little grain is an excellent meal for a diabetic dog and for any dog. much better than commercial food. That way you are able to control portions. Diabetes mellitus in dogs can be divided into two categories: a congenital type that is similar to juvenile-onset (Type I) diabetes in humans; and an acquired type that is similar to adult-onset (Type I) diabetes in humans. Most canine diabetes mellitus is insulin-dependent Type I, also known as IDDM.

Matt - you do not “catch” diabetes. As a former endocrinology researcher, I know that for a fact.

Ditto to Ty…take him to the vet…they make insulin for dogs, just like they do for people…THEN, if you Vet suggests Prescription Diet Canine W/D or R/D (they ALL seem to push it, but it’s crap food)…ask if he knows of a Holistic type food, as an alternative. I typed in “Food for Diabetic Dogs” into Google and there’s a TON of information about feed…Here’s a link of a bunch of foods for diabetic dogs…

Contrary to matt18091’s information…the number one reason a dog (or anybody is diabetic) is heredity…

So…have the vet test his blood, to get a reading on his sugar levels…keep his weight down…check food bags for ingredients like Fructose (corn sugar), lactose (milk sugar)…pretty anything that ends with an “tose”…which will be a sugar derivitive…

I’ve heard you cn give it some kind of liquid or little pilsl or so?

Answer #4

matt- At no point did I say that you were wrong in your belief that high fructose is a contributing factor in many cases of diabetes. Sometimes the body does not produce enough insulin to control the sugar intake.

I said that you don’t “catch” diabetes…you were incorrect in that statement. You develop diabetes. the word “catch” indicates that it is transmitted from one person to another, like a cold.

Answer #5

Don’t feed it dry dog food!!! That’s likely what made your dog diabetic.

High-fructose corn syrup in dry dog/cat foods can lead to Diabetes in animals and people alike.

It has been proven in many studies.

because of the corn syrup in soda drinking 3 sodas a day gives you a 75% more chance of catching diabetes in your life time.

It is possible to find dry dog foods without corn syrup. just check the ingredients at the back of the box.

Answer #6

Oh, I see now. thx for your correction.

Answer #7

Answer #8

Take him to the vet, he may need a change of diet. Or there could be something else wrong with him.

Answer #9

A vet told me that amoeba. when my cat died. :( he said it was from Diabetes caused by High-fructose corn syrup in dry dog/cat foods… Its not the leading coze of Diabetes but it is a major cause.
