Who here has a way for detecting sarcasm?

I cant seem to do it? Ok, its rather simple. In a variety of circumstances, whether written or spoken, i cannot detect sarcasm, and attempt to interpret the phrase literally. This can be very frustrating, as it leads to people abusing this flaw, and making jokes from it. So, anyone got a technique?

This is called cross cultural (miss) understanding. And it is commonly happening to the Speaker of English as a foreign language like me. Among 220 millions people, I think only 20% of Indonesian speak English and few speak very good English. So I barely have counterparts in speaking English here, so yes the lack of “live” conversation makes me get difficulty in understanding what the real meaning behind what is said (what is written between the line) Not only sarcasm but also other expressions. We would know holysh&t better than holycow…lol

I can detect sarcasm but sometimes I can’t tell because they don’t say it with a slightest bit of sarcasm. Like when my math teacher was being sarcastic but I thought she was lecturing me like there was no hint and what she was saying didn’t sound sarcastic it sounded normal.

Whenever you read or hear something and you think: “He/she can’t possibly mean it that way.”, think about whether it might be sarcastic.

It’s a practice thing. Really. The more often you get in touch with sarcasm, the easier it gets to spot it. Read sarcastic literature. That will make you used to it. And use sarcasm yourself. Start with the obvious: For example if something is extremely ugly, call it a masterpiece of modern art. If a room stinks, say “what a bloomy, lovely scent in here, can someone please get a foul egg to make it complete?”.

Hm… I have an idea that could maybe help you to make your classmates quit making fun of your inability to detect sarcasm…

Best way to stop others from making fun of you is find a way to make fun of yourself and exaggerate a little bit.

If you have a mobile phone that can record and play jingles, reccord the sentence “Sarcasm Alert. Ms Millers statement may have been sarcastic. Sarcasm probability level 3.” Replace “Ms Miller” with the name of your teacher. Make it sound machine-like voice. It has to be understandable. But best is if it doesn’t sound like you.

Then you prepare the phone to play that jingle on one click. Go into “Ms Millers” lesson and wait for a statement that may or may not be sarcastic and play your jingle. Then say. “Sorry, I forgot to put my app on silent.” switch off your phone and put it in your bag. After that, whenever you’re not sure wheter someone’s being sarcastic or not, get out your phone and give it a puzzeled look and say something negative about the reliability of your sarcasm detection app. Whenever people laugh at you, blame the app. ;-)

Oh, yeah, look up for “How to detect sarcasm in 10 easy steps” book or “Sarcasm for dummies” by Antee S. Ocial. These books pretty much explain everything, for that sarcastic guy attitude that girls fall for ;)

Answer #10

was that totally necessary?

Answer #11

You want to learn how to distinguish sarcasm - you have to be exposed to obvious illustrations of it which will train you to recognize less obvious examples. So yes, I think it was helpful (if not entirely necessary) to give you these exaggerated specimens. Perhaps you don’t recognize sarcasm because you fail to appreciate the subtlety and eloquence of sarcasm. Sarcasm may be the lowest form of wit, but it takes no more or less wit to spot it when it is used.

Answer #12

There are people who can’t detect sarcasm? Well I know people with developmental disabilities, really low IQ, and of course younger kids have a hard time with sarcasm, but I’ve never really thought about how one detects sarcasm.
