How do you deal with a doctor who is trying to push you to have surgery that you don't feel is needed?

My ob doc wants me to get a hysterectomy because I have Endometriosis, I know the surgery may be needed, but I feel he should try other alternatives first. He has me on the Depot Lupron shot and that is supposed to maybe cure it but its like he’s not giveing it a chance to work. When I seen him last week he told me either have the surgery or go to another doc, what should I do

Answer #1

You need to tell him NO say you dont belive it is necessary and he need to stop putting pressure on you, explain how you would apreciate an alternative and you would rather try those, if all fails try a different doctor or go fro the hysterectomy, it might be good for you.

Answer #2

Maybe you should go with another doctor, you want a doctor who is going to work with you, not against you.

Answer #3

Get a second opinion. I’m surprised you haven’t already. Also depro lupron is pretty hectic treatment for endiometriosis, surely your doctor has a valid point. In any case if you are doubting his opinion, go get another one.

Answer #4

your condition is one that is very very painful (as i am sure you are aware), you probably spend more time in pain before / during and after menstration than you spend out of pain the rest of the month.

you as the patient are entitled to get a second opinion, and your doctor cannot discrimiate you for doing that.

if you sincerely feel that the new medication will work and will avoid this surgery then stick to your guns on it…

however, i would also say that such extreme measures are rarely ventured into unless the doctor really feels it’s needed.

personally, adter caring for patients with this condition myself, i would want to do anything to get rid of it. it effects every avenue of your sex life, personal life, not to mention the physical and mental drain that pain puts on a person. all this you know already? i am in no doubt at all… but unless you wanted children / more children, then you really should consider the benefits of this surgery? 6 weeks of taking it easy is preferable to prolonging what may well be an enivitable operation.

just think carefully about your reasons for NOT having the surgery.. i would address what you are afraid of? is making you worried etc first.

regardless though.. as i said earlier, if you feel there is an alternative that has this excellent success rate then i would get a second opinion. and you’re doctor has taken an oath to insure that he does what is in the best interest for the patient, both short and long term.

good luck x

Answer #5

Well I’m mostly concerned about hormonal probs, sex drive, and breast cancer due to hormal treatments

Answer #6

and I’m not worried bout more kids I allready had tubes tied, that’s when they found the Endometriosis, he said it was everywhere and was surprised I had kids at all

Answer #7

Yeah he said lupron shot or surgery, so I chose the shot

Answer #8

thing is, at the moment isn’t sex effected? and they can give you meds to help your body get back ‘into the swing of things’ (as such)….

just think about how much it is impacting your life at the moment? you are eventually going to have to go on HRT (we all are .. unless i want to become some mad crazed menopausal woman…. when i’m on my period i’m bad enough already lol)

regardless get a second opinion, just don’t rule the surgery out… quality of life is so so important x x

Answer #9

Well, I suggest you get multiple opinions on the matter. Who knows, maybe your doctor does not know best.

After getting multiple opinions, decide if you want the surgery or not.

Answer #10

Tell him no and also tell him that you don’t want this surgery as you don’t feel it is necessary.

Answer #11

I’m surprised you haven’t left already? I don’t deal well with people who try to make me do anything (my parents fault for spoiling me) and I especially don’t do well with threats. I probably would have left a long time ago.

Answer #12

Well actually it has increased the sex drive havein the shot. U have given me much to think about, thx so much

Answer #13

i would tell him that you would feel more comfortable seeing the effects of the Depot Lupron shot work in and see how much your condition betters, then if it doesn’t work, and you still aren’t comfortable with the surgery get a second opinion..
