Dead people

How long does it take for a dead person to decompose

Answer #1

This is a very difficult question to answer without more details, as there are many factors that determine the rate of decomposition of a human body, such as:

  1. Are there animals and/or insects present?
  2. Is the body underwater?
  3. Is it in a warm or cold environment?
  4. Is it buried?
  5. If it is buried, is the soil wet, dry, rocky, sandy?
  6. Are there chemicals such as salt or lye acting on the body?

And so forth. Depending on what outside influences are acting on the body, it can be reduced to a skeleton in as little as three weeks or take as long as several years. Although sometimes, in special circumstances, decomposition can be halted indefinitely, such as with the peat-bog corpses of Europe.
