How damaging is back-combing your hair?

Is there a proper way to do it to avoid damage? Just curious.

Answer #1

not really, its damaging because it is creating split ends in your hair.

Answer #2

Back combing is very bad for your hair. When you lift up those little pieces of cuticle, they never return to their nice flat arrangement, no matter what you do to your hair. Instead, they become increasingly loose and eventually break off. Once you remove enough layers of cuticles, your hair shaft will be damaged and you’ll create a split end. If it helps you to visualize it, think of cuticles like the shingles on the roof of a house. To know more go to this site http://funadvice.com/r/14tu4rsp9hu

Back combing your hair won’t damage it if it’s done properly. Most people think that back combing is absolutely ripping the comb backwards though the hair- which obviously will make the hair snap. Then they add hairspray and at the end of the day attempt to brush it out! A absolute recepie for disaster!! I have back combed hundereds of model’s hair for fashion shows and photo shoots and the 100% best way to do it is to use a postiche brush, not a comb. A postiche brush is this: http://funadvice.com/r/3m673hfkdq . You need to take a clean section of hair, not a clump, and gently and slowly brush it backwards to your scalp. It won’t look right at first and may ‘bubble’ up (the hair will go down in funny looking loops), but with practice it will become easier.
