Dads diabeties got worse

My dad has diabeaties (sorry I dunno how to spell it), and in his last check-up the nurse said if he didnt drink more water, do more excericise, and drink less alcholhole he might have to go onto injecting himself. Right now he just takes lots of pills, and as his diabeaties have got worse he has had to take more and more pills, right now he is at the top of pill taking, if his diabeaties gets worse he HAS TO inject inciline. I’m really worried about him, now he has to drink a whole huge litre of water a day, and really cut down on his wine, only two bottles a week, and walk twise each day. I’m walking with him, sometimes, and reminding him to drink water, but im scared he’ll forget and his diabeaties will get worse and more serious. Also it cant be very fun for him, he cant eat any sweets, and his wine is like his chocolate to him, its his nice thing. And now he cant even have that, all he is eating is fruit, vegetables and beans and stuff (hes veggie) and drinking water a lot. And he’s not getting much me time to himself, since of all the walking and his work pilling up and stuff. He really really doesnt want to inject, thats the worst possible outcome, when he came back from the doctors from his check-up, he looked close to tears to me. And what if I get diabeaties? If this is how hard it is I really dont want it! Is it past down in the family or something? Please give me some advice and reasurane, because im scared and worried for him and for me if I get it.

Eating right (and at the right times), exercising and just generally taking care of your body will significantly reduce your risk of diabetes. There are several foods which do seem to help your body with insulin production. It has been a while since I looked, but I believe most of these foods are more difficult to digest which in turn lowers the sugar spike (and insulin spike) you get after meals. Essentially slowing your entire digestive tract down a notch or two.

Possibly it would be a good idea to eat more smaller meals so that the insulin level would remain relatively constant throughout the day. Also while vegetables are good (for the most part) if he is eating ones that are high in starches (generally root types potatoes, carrots, turnips etc) they have more sugar. I’d lean more toward green and leafy instead of buried in ground type. Thinking on it a bit more, if he needs more bulk, or heavier feeling foods in high diet try something like oatmeal. Use steelcut oats and soak them. They retain more nutrition that way. Think of ways to include barley into your diet, and maybe look at the type of rice you are using. If you’re using instant consider making the change to a brown rice and cooking it in a pan. If you need more suggestions send me an email. We can talk more.

My dad has diabetes too :/// He’s kinda the same as your dad, except the close to injecting part But I know how you feel cause he drinks wine too! And he’s abit older than most dads so thats also a risk :( Don’t worry though, as long as he tries really hard to cut back, he probably won’t have to have the insulin :)) x
